In 2006, a random series of events brought photographer Yuri Dojc and documentary filmmaker Katya Krausova, both former political refugees, to an abandoned Jewish school in their Slovakian homeland. The school had remained almost completely untouched since the moment all of its students were deported during the Shoah in 1942. Yuri photographed the building and the abandoned, decaying books inside. The images were the beginning of “Last Folio,” an internationally wandering exhibition and documentary film with the same title.
The exhibition was brought to Berlin to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. For this special occasion, the images were collected for a photography book that was published for the exhibition opening. Last Folio: A Photographic Memory shows Yuri Dojc’s portraits of the book remains. Each book was treated as a survivor. The book cover was pressed with a monumental typeface, similar to a grave stone. The purple color was inspired by some of the school books.
Designing this book was an emotional experience and I’m very happy to say that I found two new friends during this project.
