While the term Design is widely discussed between designers and design researchers, a common understanding is usually missing in the public memory. More often than not, one does something “in media” or “in advertising,” and always has to justify why the work costs as much as it does to the client. The creative process is usually hidden.
Even for people with an understanding of a designer’s occupation, the majority of work remains invisible. Be it type design, micro typography, draft revisions, programming, or the development of abstract concepts – the path, from the beginning of an idea to realization – is full of steps that are rarely noticed.
Why is it like this? Where does it come from? And why does my mother still have problems understanding what I do? There are the questions that I grappled with.
This theoretical thesis analyzes the origin of design professions, the theoretical discussion of what design is, and what makes understanding it complicated.
